Teepalig Rural Reforestation (TRR) is a community-based organization in rural Ghana. In the local Talensi language, Teepalig means “next generation.” TRR works at the intersection of environmental conservation and community-led development. We strive to foster sustainable social, cultural, and economic growth, with an emphasis on women and vulnerable youth.
Our Founder
Our founder Issac Naamko Nang was born in Gbeogo, a village in Talensi, in northern Ghana. He grew up witnessing deforestation in his local community until one day when he was twelve, when he had a dream. He saw himself restoring the trees to Ghana, making Gbego green again. Isaac has since worked to make this dream a reality by creating Teepalig. In line with this aim, Teepalig employs members of the local community to plant and grow saplings in Isaacs nursery. This gives the women and youth employed a brighter outlook for their future, and aims to sustainably restore northern Ghanaian agricultural and forestry practices.
Talensi District
TRR is based in the Talensi District of Northern Ghana. With over 90,000 people, Talensi faces many challenges due to widespread poverty, limited education, and many families not having access to water or sanitation. Unfortunately, this means that many young people leave to search for jobs in the cities of southern Ghana. Others leave school very early or face unwanted teenage pregnancies.
Ghana is experiencing rapid deforestation, and has lost 1/4 of its forests since 2000 (Global Forest Watch 2023) Talensi is situated in the dry region in Northern Ghana, so deforestation is especially bad A lack of access to electricity means that most families must use firewood or charcoal for cooking. This deforestation degrades the surrounding farmland and reduces rainfall. The region used to have two rain seasons, but now they have only one which comes later each year. Drought has worsened deforestation and caused bush fires, degrading the land so much that it can no longer be used to farm for basic needs.
