Our sapling nursery in Gbego in northern Ghana grows native species such as Boswellia, Baobab and Acacia. We care for these saplings when they are at their most vulnerable so that they can be replanted across our community. Local youth and women help to raise these trees while earning incomes to support their families.
We collaborate with farmers, traditional leaders, teachers, and others to share the many values of tree planting. We emphasize that all community members can be environmental stewards and help to support both reforestation and sustainable agriculture. All of our programs also include efforts to support those who are most vulnerable in our community, especially widows and children.
We work with local and regional schools to inspire youth to plant and care for trees. We organize school trips out to our nursery- where we can show the students how to engage in sustainable agriculture. Additionally, we provide saplings to plant at their schools, and teach them about how trees provide shade and food while helping us with our air, soil, and water.
We want to expand our work to include a community forest, beginning with reforesting four acres of land. We hope that with all of the trees we plant we can create a green place for people across our region to visit. This forest will showcase Ghanas ecological diversity, as it will also be home to fish ponds, beehives, and pollinator friendly plants for our butterflies.
